What Parents Need to Know About All Stars

2023 All Stars Tryouts and Commitment

GHLL Minors, Majors, Juniors and Seniors Baseball & Softball Families,

All-Stars season is upon us, and we would like to take this opportunity to make sure you have a full understanding of the All-Star commitment, and ask that you read the following information so you can make a well-informed decision about whether you would like to have your player tryout for All Stars.

  • NEW FOR 2023 - ALL STARS TRYOUTS!

We have made a change to our All Stars player selection process this year. We will no longer be having the players and coaches vote for the players, players will be selected following the All Stars Tryouts.

     - If you want your player to be eligible for the 2023 All-Star selection process, they must register for tryouts by the May 14th deadline and attend their assigned All Stars tryouts session on either Wednesday May 17th or Friday May 19th.

    - Players who do not register for and attend All Star Tryouts will not be eligible for All Stars.

    - All League Age 8-12 year olds playing in GHLL who meet Little League School Enrollment or Residency requirements are eligible to tryout for All Stars.

    - By attending tryouts, should your player be selected to the team, you are confirming your commitment to the All-Stars team, and all expectations and requirements associated with playing All Stars.

***PLEASE DO NOT ASSUME YOUR PLAYER WILL NOT BE SELECTED FOR AN ALL STARS TEAM - EVERY WHO ATTENDS TRYOUTS IS ELIGIBLE AND MAY BE SELECTED FOR A TEAM***

    What is All-Stars?

The Little League All-Star tournament is a competitive post-season competition where All-Star baseball and softball teams from each league compete for a District Championship. If a team wins the District Tournament, then they move on to the State Tournament.

For Majors, Intermediate, Juniors and Seniors Baseball and Softball level All-Star teams, if they continue winning, they will advance to Regionals and finally the Little League World Series.

    Who Can Play All Stars?

Players who meet the following criteria are eligible for the team:

    • Players must be living (or attend school) within our Gig Harbor Little League boundaries - the 98332, 98335 or 98333 postal codes.
    • Players must meet age eligibility requirements. Players League Ages 8-16 are eligible to play on a team. Ages for All-Star teams shall be determined using the official Little League “League Age” Baseball & Softball rules.
    • Players must have played in at least 8 regular season games

    All-Stars Commitment

Being involved in All-Stars requires a level of dedication and commitment beyond the normal requirements of a regular season. All-Stars Tournament play is intensely competitive and will require more focus and a committed effort to succeed on the part of the players and their parents. Please carefully consider if you are willing to make this commitment.

    • Players must be available for all All-Stars practices and all games. Due to the short turn around time between the start of practices and the start of the District tournaments, players should expect practices to be scheduled at least five (5) days per week between the date of team selection and through the scheduled tournament dates (see below schedule). Parents are responsible for ensuring players attend all practices, and games.
    • Depending on your level of play, when the tournaments start and how far in the tournament your team advances, your player’s All Stars experience could end up lasting through the month of July or longer.
    • Mandatory Play Rules - Tournament Rules differ from Regular Season Rules in many ways, one being the mandatory play requirements. In Tournament play, the mandatory play requirements are that every player will participate in each game for a minimum of one at-bat, there are no mandatory play requirements with regards to defensive playing time. No player will be selected to a team to simply sit in the dugout, but please be aware that due to many variables your player may not play beyond the minimum playing time required.
    • The Tournaments are double elimination tournaments, so all teams will play at least two games in the tournament.
    • Parents are responsible for providing Gig Harbor Little League with the documentation needed to prove age and residency eligibility. Parents must provide an original birth certificate that is Government Issued (State/County). It must be an original certified copy, no photocopies will be accepted. Parents will also be required to provide documentation showing proof of residency or school enrollment eligibility.
    • GHLL will provide your player with an All Stars hat/visor and a personalized All Stars jersey that is yours to keep.
    • Families will be financially responsible for the All-Stars tournament fee which will be between $130-$175, and any additional uniform costs that the league does not cover (pants, socks, warmups etc). Families will also be responsible for travel costs and other expenses that Gig Harbor Little League does not pay for.
    • Parents should understand that All-Star tournaments will require travel within the state of Washington, and may require travel beyond the state (Majors level and above only).
    • Parents should understand that they will be responsible for lodging, travel and other expenses that may be incurred if the team advances beyond the District 2 tournament.

    All-Stars Schedule

    • Families should expect All-Stars practices to begin right after our regular season ends, and to be scheduled at least five (5) times a week leading up to the tournament start dates, and during the tournament(s).
    • The District 2 and Washington State start dates are outlined below. Locations will be announced once they are finalized.
    • Games will be played both on weekdays and weekends, and may be scheduled for both daytime games and evening games. Tournaments are double elimination, and depending how far your team advances, the tournament can last 7-10 days beyond the start dates outlined below.  We are unable to provide exact game schedules at this time.
    • If your team wins the District 2 Tournament, they will advance to the Washington State Tournament. Possible locations are listed below, but are subject to change.

    All-Star Selection Process

We have made a change to our All Stars player selection process this year. We will no longer be having the players and coaches vote for the players, players will be selected following the All Stars Tryouts. Players must also have shown exemplary skills, aptitude and attitude during the regular season, and be recognized for their playing excellence.Selection of players to the All Stars teams will be determined and approved by the GHLL All-Stars Committee.

Teams are organized as follows: 8-10 year olds, 9-11 year olds, and (Majors) 10-12 year olds, Juniors and Seniors (Baseball only).

In previous seasons, because we were operating as two leagues - American and National  - governed under one board of directors, we traditionally fielded All Stars Baseball teams at the 8-10 year olds, 9-11 year olds, and (Majors) 10-12 year olds levels in both our American National Leagues. This year, we have recently been granted approval by Little League to combine our two leagues into one, and as result of that we no longer have to have teams only consisting of American League players, or only consisting of National League players. Because of this rule change, and dependent upon how many kids tryout for All Stars, it is possible that we may only field one team at each level of play.

Depending on player numbers and other factors, we hope to field the following teams this year:

    SOFTBALL -

    • 8-10 Year-Olds Softball - one team
    • 9-11 Year Old Softball - one team
    • 10-12 Year-Olds (Majors) Softball - one team

    BASEBALL -

    • 8-10 Year-Olds Baseball - at least one team
    • 9-11 Year-Olds Baseball - at least one team
    • 10-12 Year-Olds (Majors) Baseball - at least one team
    • Juniors Baseball - one team
    • Seniors Baseball - one team

Please note - due to the difference in the structure of age ranges on the tournament teams versus our regular season, your player may be selected for a team that is in a different level of play than they played in during the regular season.

If you want your player to be eligible for the 2023 All-Star selection process, they must attend their scheduled session at All Stars tryouts on Wednesday May 17th or Friday May 19th.

Players who do not register for and attend All Star Tryouts will not be eligible for All Stars.

By attending tryouts, should your player be selected to the team, you are confirming your commitment to the All-Stars team, and all expectations and requirements associated with playing All Stars.

***PLEASE DO NOT ASSUME YOUR PLAYER WILL NOT BE SELECTED FOR AN ALL STARS TEAM - EVERY WHO ATTENDS TRYOUTS IS ELIGIBLE AND MAY BE SELECTED FOR A TEAM***
