New for 2024 - Volunteer Requirements with GHLL

Gig Harbor Little League is an all-volunteer organization that cannot provide a quality Little League program to our kids without the generous donation of your time and effort.

The quality and consistency of the Little League experience each year is largely determined by the number of volunteers. The size of our league has grown so much these past few years, but volunteer participation has not, and it has been challenging at times to operate our league without sufficient volunteer participation. We need all parents to be able to volunteer some time during the course of the season to support not only your child’s team, but also Gig Harbor Little League as an organization. Big or small, there's always something that you can do that will be greatly appreciated.

Starting this season, GHLL will be requiring families (excluding families with players only registered in our Tee Ball, Quickball and Coach Pitch Baseball & Softball divisions) to sign up and commit to volunteering for a minimum of 2-4 hours per player this season.

We realize that not all families are able to meet the above volunteer commitments. Families that choose to opt-out of the volunteer commitment will be charged a $100 non-volunteer fee during the registration process. This fee is per family, not per player. Similarly, if you volunteer for a specific role but don't fulfill the volunteer commitment by the end of the season, your account may be assessed the fee.

Listed below are the volunteer roles you can choose from during the registration process. We do not expect you to just jump in and do these tasks on your own. GHLL will provide trainings for managers, umpires and scorekeepers. For those who sign up to help with the fields, closing the park or Player Evaluations etc, you will be assisting or working under the direction of our Executive Board members.

  • Team Manager - Manage a baseball / softball team for season
  • Assistant Coach –  Serve as an Assistant Coach for a baseball/softball team for the season
  • Umpire - Umpire 5 games in either our Baseball or Softball program at the Coach/player Pitch (AA) level and above
  • Team Parent/Scorekeeper/Pitch Count/Scoreboard - Assist Team Manager with team communications, keep the scorebook and/or pitch count or run the scoreboard for a minimum of 2 games during the season etc
  • Field Prep & Maintenance - Helping with field maintenance prior to and/or during the season OR assist an Executive Board member with closing up the GHLL Park 4 times in a season (including trash, etc) 4 game minimum commitment.
  • Other Volunteering Opportunities

Other League Events and Projects

All volunteers need to complete the required volunteer background check and BASE Abuse Awareness Training before they can begin their volunteer duties.

Volunteer Sign Up & Background Checks

When you apply to become a volunteer, you give the local Little League organization the right to conduct necessary background checks. Gig Harbor Little League utilizes an online Little League Volunteer Application and Background Screening Process. All volunteers with the league must complete a background check and complete the USA Baseball BASE Abuse Awareness Training. This is a new part of the Little League Volunteer Application process for 2024, and along with passing the background check, the training must be completed before you will be allowed to begin any duties with the league this season.

Volunteers must sign up for a Volunteer Role in our system to begin the process of completing the online Volunteer Application. When you sign up in our system for a Volunteer Role, you will begin the background check process by beginning the online application on our site. You will then receive an email from JDP Background Screening which will contain a link for you to complete the online Volunteer Application. It takes about 15 minutes to complete the application, and you will need to upload a copy of your Government Issued ID (a valid Drivers License).

To sign up for a Volunteer Role in our system:

IMPORTANT: If you do not already have an account in our system, but the other parent does, please have them add you as an additional user on their account so you are linked to your player(s).  If you create your own account, we will not be able to link you to your player’s account.

STEP 1:
You must first sign up for a Volunteer Role in our system to start the application and background check process. Please log in to your account on gigharborlittleleague.org and click on the Volunteer tab >> and then click on Find Volunteer Roles.
When you are selecting a Volunteer Role, choose the role you're signing up for, you may be asked to answer some GHLL specific questions as part of the process, as well as answering questions to start the Little League background check process.
*You will need to upload a copy/picture of your driver's license as part of the process, so please have that ready to go.

STEP 2: Once you've completed Step 1, you will receive two emails - one from GHLL confirming that you have signed up to volunteer, and more importantly, an email within 24-48 hours from "Gig Harbor American" containing a link to complete the application online. It should look like this:

Hello GHLL VOLUNTEER,

As part of your consideration for volunteer work, you will need to fill out the Volunteer Application found at the link below.

The Volunteer Application takes approximately 15 minutes to complete and we recommend that you double check the information you provide for accuracy to make sure there is no delay in processing your background check.

To remain in active consideration for volunteer work, you must complete the Volunteer Application within 14 days.

Thank you,

GIG HARBOR LITTLE LEAGUE

The online application should take at most 10-15 minutes to fill out. You will not have completed the background check process until you complete this step and sign electronically online.

Make sure that you receive the email confirming that you have completed the online application, it will contain your file number and it should look like this:

Hello GHLL VOLUNTEER,

Thank you for filling out our volunteer application. Your file number is 1234567. Use this number when referring to your background screening report. If you have any questions regarding next steps, please contact us using the information below.

Thank you,

GIG HARBOR LITTLE LEAGUE
Gig Harbor, WA 98335

The final part of the process is to complete the USA Baseball BASE Abuse Awareness Training . This is a new part of the Little League Volunteer Application process for 2024, and along with passing the background check, the training must be completed before you will be allowed to begin any duties with the league this season.

Click here to create an account and complete the BASE training. When you have completed the training, please download the certificate of completion and email it to [email protected]

Again, you will not be considered approved to volunteer until you have completed both the background check and the BASE training.

Thank you for volunteering. The success of Gig Harbor Little League depends on community volunteers like you.
